The Board is requested to approve allowing the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners to sign forms requesting allocation of Lottery Funds from the NC Public School Building Capital Fund by Durham Public Schools (DPS) for DPS related capital projects.
Over $2 million of Lottery Funds are annually available for use by Durham Public Schools to support various capital project needs identified by DPS. The first step (of a multi-step process) in getting Lottery Funds allocated is an official NC Public School Building Capital Fund project request form being filled out by DPS and that form being signed by the Chair of the Board of Education and the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. That signed document is then sent back to the NC Public School Building Capital Fund who then determines whether the request is approved or not.
After approval by the NC Public School Building Capital Fund, both DPS and the County are notified of the award. Durham Public Schools then brings forward a Capital Project Amendment request to the Board of County Commissioners to create a capital project using Lottery Funds received from the NC Public School Building Capital Fund. Durham County is the fiduciary holder of approved Lottery Funds used by DPS for capital projects.
There is no additional cost to the County for this action by the Board.
