Agenda Text
The Board is requested to approve Budget Ordinance Amendment No.25BCC008 to recognize $40,300 in Grant Funding from the State Library of North Carolina LSTA Grant in Support of Meeting the Makers Where They Are. These funds are part of the Library Services and Technology Act grant program administered by the State Library. These funds will go to support the purchase of a new laser cutter, mobile battery packs, 3D scanners, and other supporting equipment to support the programming initiatives of Durham County Library's Maker + STEAM unit.

The purpose of this project is twofold; the grant will both support an expansion of Maker + STEAM's outreach capacity while simultaneously broadening the kinds of devices and services on offer for both on-site and off-site programs. Mobile battery packs will make possible an expansion of the unit's outreach capacity by allowing staff to offer more electrical outlets to participants. Two 3D scanners will enmesh within the library's existing suite of 3D printers, expanding the creative potential of the Innovation Lab. The new laser cutter will replace the existing model that no longer benefits from manufacturer support. Supporting technology like tool carts, extension chords, and surge protectors will also be purchased with grant funds.

As part of this project, Durham County Library will provide a $5,712.25 match. Of this, $1,122.25 will take the form of an in-kind cost share for the project manager's contribution to the project. The project will begin upon board approval and the devices purchased will become a permanent part of the Maker + STEAM unit's technology offerings.

Alignment with Strategic Plan: This expansion of access to cutting-edge techno...
