Request for Board Action:
Agenda Text
The Board is requested to appropriate $400,000 to address critical operating infrastructure and deferred maintenance needs at the historic W. G. Pearson building. The Board is also requested to approve Budget Ordinance Amendment No. 25BCC055 a transfer of $400,000 from the Debt Service Fund fund balance to the General Fund to support the expense. This request builds upon Durham County's successful 2016 public-private partnership with Student U and Self Help, which funded the building's initial renovation.
Since 2005, Student U has been an important community partner of Durham's educational landscape, equipping students with essential academic skills and supporting their personal development for high school success and beyond. The 2016 renovation of the W. G. Pearson building has enabled Student U to significantly expand its impact, now serving over 550 students annually through comprehensive after-school and summer enrichment programs. The facility has also become a vital community hub, hosting ten nonprofit organizations that provide essential services to Durham residents.
The funding will address necessary facility maintenance and infrastructure improvements, maintaining the county's investment in this valuable community asset. This allocation aligns with the spirit and scope of the original public-private partnership while ensuring the building can continue effectively serving Durham's students and families.
Alignment with Strategic Plan: Empowered Community: Empowering the community to enhance their opportunities to thrive.
