1. Now Accepting Applications for the Durham County Food Security Grant Program - Applications are now being accepted for Durham County’s Food Security Grant Program. A total of $250,000 is available to support local projects that strengthen food security for Durham residents. Grant awards range from $20,000-$50,000. The deadline to apply is Monday, October 26, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. Projects may use a wide range of strategies, including but not limited to:
• Providing direct food assistance
• Helping residents access nutrition programs
• Building organizational capacity
• Improving coordination between service providers
• Offering training in growing, preparing, or sourcing food

2. 3rd -12th Grade Conservation Contests - Durham County students in 3rd - 12th grade are invited to show off their creativity and knowledge in our Conservation Contests. The contests challenge students to illustrate their knowledge through a poster, essay, slide show, or public speaking presentation. The contest is open to all Durham County public, private, charter, and homeschool students as well as student clubs. This year's theme is Soil and Water - Yours for Life. 3. Flu Shots Now Available at the Durham County Department of Public Health - Flu season is here! The CDC recommends getting your flu shot by the end of October for the best protection. Visit the Durham County Department of Public Health’s Immunization Clinic Monday through Friday for flu shots-no appointment needed, though appointments are available. Call 919-560-7608 to schedule. Insurance is accepted. Flu shots are available at reduced or no cost for people who are uninsured or underinsured. 4. New Episode of “In Touch with Durham County” Premieres - The October 2026 episode of “In Touch with Durham County”, produced by the Public Information Office, is now live. This month’s show highlights two important areas of County service. Sheila Bowens‑Bratts, Director of the Youth Home, discusses expanded services designed to support youth in a safe and structured environment as they navigate the court process. The episode also features Internal Audit Director Shirley McFadden, who shares how the Internal Audit Department works to ensure County programs remain accountable, efficient, and well‑managed.
