Agenda Text

The Board is requested to recognize and celebrate 20 years of Kids Voting Durham at Durham County and Durham County Cooperative Extension.

In 2006, Durham County adopted Kids Voting Durham as a program of Durham County Cooperative Extension, providing an institutional home from which the program could grow, deepen its community partnerships, and reach generations of Durham's young people. Over its 20 years at Durham County, Kids Voting Durham has provided more than 250,000 young people with hands-on learning opportunities to develop their civic knowledge, build the skills to participate in civic life, and cultivate a sense of civic identity, belonging, and responsibility.

The resolution celebrates the youth who have led and participated in Kids Voting Durham along with the deep partnerships and relationships that have propelled the program forward: from Measurement Inc. tallying ballots; to the Durham County Board of Elections, Durham County Library, and Durham Public Schools supporting Kids Voting elections; to NC State 4-H creating expanded Kids Voting opportunities for youth across the state; and to Durham County Cooperative Extension for the contributions of their staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Kids Voting Durham will celebrate this 20-year anniversary on Saturday, November 14 at Durham County Cooperative Extension, 721 Foster Street, from 11:00am-2:00pm. This event is open to the public and Kids Voting youth leaders and participants (past and present) and community partners are encouraged to attend.

Alignment with Strategic Plan: This proclamation aligns with the strategic focus area Empowered Community.

Resource Persons: Carolyn Kreuger, Kids Voting Durham Program Coordinator; Donna Rewalt, County Extension Director.

County Manager’s Recommendation:  The County Manager recommends that the Board recognize and celebrate 20 years of Kids Voting Durham at Durham County and Durham County Cooperative Extension.
