Request for Board Action:

Agenda Text

The Board is requested to receive a presentation about the 2022 White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health and the County Food Security Coordinator’s in-person attendance of this momentous conference (<https://health.gov/our-work/nutrition-physical-activity/white-house-conference-hunger-nutrition-and-health>).

The one-day conference was an important milestone since it had been “more than 50 years since the first and only White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health was held in 1969” (OASH, 2022). The White House Conference on September 28th was intended to catalyze national, state, and local government agencies, as well as the private sector around a coordinated national strategy to improve food security, nutrition, and health in the United States (<https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/White-House-National-Strategy-on-Hunger-Nutrition-and-Health-FINAL.pdf>).

The conference identified this moment as a key time for public and private entities to consider how they can make commitments that align with the national strategy and further catalyze transformational investments. To date, there have been more than $8 billion in new commitments in response to the call to action (<https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/09/28/fact-sheet-the-biden-harris-administration-announces-more-than-8-billion-in-new-commitments-as-part-of-call-to-action-for-white-house-conference-on-hunger-nutrition-and-health/>).

Alignment with Strategic Plan: Appropriate food security support for Durham County’s population aligns with Goal 2: Health and Well-Being for All of the Durham County Strategic Plan.
