The Board is requested to proclaim June 2026 Gun Violence Awareness Month in Durham County. Gun Violence Awareness Month is observed throughout June to honor victims, raise awareness, and advocate for gun safety. Gun Violence Awareness Month draws attention to the ongoing crisis of gun violence in the United States, where over 43,000 lives are lost annually and an average of 120 people die from gun-related incidents each day. The observance highlights the impact of gun violence on communities, particularly children and teens, and encourages advocacy for stronger gun safety. The color orange is worn to honor victims of gun violence and symbolize life, safety, and the value of human life. Gun violence is preventable, and awareness drives action. This month is a call to educate, mobilize, and demand change to create safer communities for all.
