Agenda Text
North Carolina public records laws require local governments to properly manage and retain public records. The schedule provides the legally approved retention periods for different types of records. Following the schedule helps ensure that records needed for government operations, historical purposes, audits, investigations, or public records requests aren't destroyed prematurely. Formal approval gives departments a common set of rules to follow rather than allowing each employee or department to decide independently how long records should be kept.
Keeping all of public records forever can create unnecessary storage and administrative costs. The schedule provides a structured way to retain records for the required period and then dispose of eligible records appropriately.
The Board of Commissioners is requested to approve the attached Retention and Disposition Schedules for Local Government Agencies for Program and General Records.
