Agenda Text
The Board is requested to proclaim the week of April 11-17, 2026, as The Week of the Young Child.
The Week of the Young Child® is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This celebration is a time to recognize that children's opportunities are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child in Durham experiences the type of early environment-at home, at childcare, at school, and in the community-that will promote their early learning.
Durham’s Partnership for Children, Early Years, and Durham Technical Community College and other local organizations, in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, are leading the celebration of the Week of the Young Child.
Durham County has continued to invest in improving systems for young children and their parents and caregivers through investments in implementation of the Early Childhood Action Plan (ECAP), in County programs, such as Cooperative Extension’s Welcome Baby Program, and in public preschool for all Durham families through Durham PreK.
Alignment with Strategic Plan: A robust ecosystem of early childhood programs aligns with the DCo Forward strategic focus areas of Empowered Community and Healthy and Inclusive Community.
Resource Persons: Ileana Vink, County Early Childhood Coordinator, Dr. Linda Chappel, Senior Vice President, Early Years.
County Manager’s Recommendation: The County Manager recommends that the Board proclaim the week of April 11-17, 2026, as The Week of the Young Child.
