Body
Date of BOCC Meeting: August 14, 2023
Request for Board Action:
Agenda Text
The Board is requested to receive an update on Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) from the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Birkhead reallocated resources during the FY23 Budget Process in an effort to reduce the gun violence that is plaguing our community. Project Safe Neighborhood is a nationwide initiative, previously launched in 2001 that brings together federal, state and local governments, including community partners to identify violent crime and to develop strategies to address them. The goal of PSN is to reduce violent crime; however, not by increasing arrests and prosecutions.
A series of events are scheduled over the next few weeks to rollout this initiative and notify the community. The Sheriff’s Office will be collaborating with stakeholders to gather, sift and sort data to identify the most violent, repeat offenders.
Alignment with Strategic Plan: This item aligns with Goal 3: Safe Community
Resource Persons: Tamika Gilmore, PSN Coordinator, Durham County Sheriff’s Office; Phillip Cousin, PSM Manager, Durham County Sheriff's Office; Clarence Birkhead, Sheriff of Durham County.
