1.                     Durham County Nonprofit Agency Funding Program - Durham County will begin accepting applications for its new COVID-focused nonprofit funding program October 15, 2020, this coming Thursday. The 18-month program, which runs January 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022, will seek funding proposals from nonprofits that address both COVID response and recovery issues, as well as plan for stronger, more equitable systems in the aftermath of COVID, across three strategic target areas (Food Security; Child, Youth, and Family Wellness; Workforce Development). 

 

The County will open the application process on Thursday, Oct. 15, with submissions due on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020. Awards will be announced in early January. Recipients of funds will meet with County staff to finalize a quarterly report template, including a list of activities, deliverables, and performance measures. 

 

The County will hold two information sessions about the new process via Zoom videoconferencing on the following dates:

                     Tuesday, October 20 from 7 to 8 p.m.

                     Thursday, October 22 from 11 a.m. to noon

2.                     New 2020 Census Deadline - The deadline for the 2020 Census is October 31st. Time is running out and we need everyone to be counted to ensure that Durham County receives our fair share of federal funds for the next 10 years for education, transportation, medical services, housing and more. As you know, traditional Census activities were interrupted by the pandemic, but we must pick up the pace. We need every household to respond.

 

If you have not responded please do so today, it only takes 10 minutes to complete the Census online, or you may simply use your smartphone and call 844-330-2020 for English or 844-468-2020 for Spanish.

4.                     Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) - Are you a Durham County resident in need of durable medical equipment?  If so, Project Access will LOAN durable equipment (walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, etc.) every Tuesday from 10am - 2pm and Friday from 1pm - 5pm at 4206 N. Roxboro St, Suite 100.

5.                     Durham Seeks Feedback on the Transit Plan - the Durham Transit Plan is re-examining the 2017 Durham County Transit Plan in light of the discontinued Durham-Orange Light Rail project and would your feedback on how to use the transit funds.

6.                     Coronavirus Economic Support for Families: Extra Credit Grant Program - Most NC families with children ages 16 or younger are eligible for a $335 COVID-19 relief payment.  Eligible families will receive the payment automatically, however; if you did not file a 2019 state tax return, you may qualify if you apply before October 15, 2020.

9.                     DCHC MPO Seeks Comments on U.S. 15-501 Corridor Study - The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization is now seeking public feedback on their proposed study for the corridor.  This study identifies future highway, transit, bicycle, pedestrian and other transportation improvements along U.S. 15-501.

10.                     Durham Announces Halloween Safety Guidelines - Because of COVID-19, traditional activities like trick or treating, indoor events, and large gatherings are strongly discouraged and considered high risk.

13.                     COVID-19 Assistance for Farmers Market Operators and Local Food Hubs - A total of $750,000 will be available from federal COVID-19 funds to assist with losses from reduced number of vendors, plus offset additional expenses associations with PPE, handwashing stations and other COVID educational materials.
